The original colours used by Haida artists were Black, Red and Blue-Green. The black came primarily from lignite and also from graphite or charcoal. The Red came intitially from ochers and sometimes cinnabar, and after trading began also from chinese vermilion. Blue-Green was probably derived from copper minerals. This hummingbirds design makes great use of all colours to show four birds around a central flower.

Legends say that at one time the world was in darkness because the powerful Sky Chief kept the sun hidden in a box. It was Raven who, by trickery and cunning, stole the sun from the Sky Chief's house and escaped through the smoke hole. Raven flew up into the sky with the sun and placed it for all to enjoy.
