It is said frogs did not live on Queen Charlotte Islands until they were recently introduced. Legend explains it this way - When the Frog Chief first met a black bear, he was terrified as the Bear tried to step on the hopping frog, just for fun. When the Frog Chief told the other frogs, they decided to leave the island for fear the Bear would seek them out for more entertainment. The Haida believed that Raven ate frogs, which also accounts for the numbers.

A Haida bent box was created by steaming a single cedar plank and bending it into a square shape over time. Bentbox designs are more complex than the usual crests. Beaver is an important crest of the Haida and the subject of many legends. Two most identifying features are the tail and two large front teeth. The beaver always has ears and rounded nostrils and the tail is always crosshatched, but may also show a human face which represents the tail joint.

Haida art is the best known of the northcoast cultural styles with its bold, uncluttered style. The purity of form and the refined sense of balance shows up in contemporary designs such as this butterfly. It is a lovely example of how blank spaces are not left unadorned, with the use of faces for decoration on wings or joints. Butterfly is said to have occasionally been the Raven's travelling companion.

This contemporary design nicely shows the balance of Red and Black as well as the bold uncluttered look that is generally shown in Haida Art. Haida Artists rarely depart from their design traditions, and thus they have preserved a look that is clearly identifiable as Haida. Eagle was important to the natives, who shared their lands with this majestic bird. It is one of the two main Haida clans - Ravens and Eagles.
